Knighton Museum
Museum | Knighton | England | United Kingdom
The Knighton Museum was opened in 2017 and is located in the center of the town, on the site of a former shop which was known as the town's first department store. It is entirely run by volunteers and presents the social history of the region. The exhibitions reflect the diverse history of this border town, from the cattle drovers to the flannel weavers, showcasing aspects of trade and agriculture.
Special exhibits include a historical kitchen and laundry room from the time of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation, as well as parts of a classroom from the 1950s. Visitors have the opportunity to touch many of the artifacts, including sensory objects like a piece of real carbolic soap. A highlight of the museum is likely the oldest hand fire engine in the United Kingdom, a hand-drawn and hand-operated fire pump from the Georgian era.
The museum has a special focus on being interesting for all age groups, whether by sparking memories in older people or amazement in younger ones. It is free to visit, but welcomes donations. During the season, it is open from April to October, with efforts to also open on weekends during the winter.
